BOOK 7, CHAPTER 9, VERSE 90

Sage : Angirasa .

Gods: 1. Fire God 2. Indra (Chief of demy Gods).

Metre of the verse: 1. Gayatri 2. Virat puhastaadrihati 3. Bhuurigjagati.

USE : Disabling the sexual organs of adulters who entice the sacrifice performer's wife/beloved.

PROCEDURE:This is a set of three verses. All the three mantras are to be chanted while gazing at the adulterer. 2. The performer has to sanctify a stone, chanting the mantra and bury it at the place where the adulterer copulates with the wife.

90(1): Api vrischa puraan`aavat
Viraataih iva gushpitam
Oojaha daasasya dambhaya.

GIST
"Oh Fire God! You know all the scriptures. Befittingly cut the enemies into pieces. Simile: Just as branches are severed from the shrubs, destroy the itals of the enemies."

90(2): Vayam tadasya sambhritam
vasv indreen`a bhajaam ahee
Mlaavayaami bhrajaha
s`ibhram varun`asya vrateena tee.

GIST
(O enemy!)We are worshipping Indra with the riches seized from the enemy. By perforing the Varun`a vrata (Vow of the Rain God), we are destroying your (enemy's) glow and vitality.

saankurasya nitoodinaha
Yadaa tatamava tat tanu
yad uttatam ni tat tanu.

GIST
Let the penis of the adulterer fall, let it not reach the woman and let the intercourse fail! Ejaculate and shorten the penis of the adulterer who is lying near the woman in a low and inviting posture, is causing pain to her through excessive intercourse. Let the erect penis fall!

#002 , VERSE 7-9-91 , LET INDRA TORTURE THE ENEMIES

Metre of the verse: Trisht`hup.

USE : Destroying enemies.

PROCEDURE:The person going to battle should worship the Chief of Demy Gods i.e. Indra. While chanting the verses, clarified butter is to be dropped into the sacrificial fire.
Dry branches/twigs of the undernoted plants are to be used as fuel in the sacrificial pyre. Often this is done, while performing a sacrifice called "Indra Mahaakhya (The famous great Indra sacrifice)"

1) Palasa tree - Botanical name: Butea frondosa.
2) Udumbara tree - " Ficus racemosa.
3) Karkandhu tree - " Ziziphus Nummuluria or Ziziphus Jujuba.

Let the great protector and prosperous Indra, make the performer of this sacrifice a happy person. Let the omniscient Indra torture the enemies. Let him make us secure. Let Indra make us virile and masterful.

GIST
I am raising the lips of the enemies. Just as I chase away the barking dogs, chase the howling wolves which take away the calves from their resting mothers in cowsheds, I raise the lips of the enemies. (Here the enemy is personified in the form of a frog and by moving its lips while chanting the mantra, the performer of the ritual believes he is moving the lips of the enemy. Moving enemies' lips may, in the belief of those days, harm harm them).

USE :1. Ensure one's own safety. 2. Ensure safety of cows, home etc. 3. Sending wolves into the houses of enemies.

PROCEDURE:Red Rice (a rice variety) is to be cooked with milk. The preparation is to be sanctified by chanting the verse. Thereafter, the pudding is to be fed to enemies.

Asadam gaavaha sadanee
apaptad vasatim vayaha
Aasthaanu parvataaha

vrikkau = wolves.
apaptad = ataptad (version difference).

GIST
Just as cows stay in their sheds, birds stay in their nests, the mountains are at their respective places. Cows etc. are safe in their dwellings provided by us. Let the enemies dwellings be filled with wolves.

#009- EVIL EFFECTS OF DINING IN DREAMS

To overcome the evil effects of the person, who gets a dream of "dining in the dream". (Eating food during sleep is apparently inauspicious during the Vedic times).
Procedure: Meditate on the verse.

Yat svapnee annam as`naami
na praatar adhigamyatee;
Sarvam tada#stu mee s`ivam

GIST
The food I eat during dreams is not found (when I wake up) in the morning. The meal is not visible during the day time.
Let all that food which I ate in the dream turn auspicious to me.

#010 TREATMENT OF BREATHING AILMENTS

Gods: 1. Sun 2. Aapaha - Goddess of Water.

USE : Treatment of breathing ailments like Asthma, Pneumonia etc.

Procedure:
Boiled rice or a broth made of popcorn flour/jovar flour - is to be sanctified by chanting the verse. Then it is to be consumed.
2nd way: Water can be sanctified by taking a spoon each into folded palm and sipping, three times (called "aacamaniiyam").
3rd way: Water can be offered to Sun God, by holding the water sanctified by the chant of the verse and dropping it in a tank or river, while standing facing the Sun God.

Ava# divastaanaayanti sapta Suurya#sya rasma#yaha,
Aapaha samudriyaa dhaaraas taas tee s`alya#m asisrasan.

GIST
I hereby get the sacred water from the space to the world of Seven Suns and seven rays which flow like the currents of the seas. Let the waters cure all the ailments (of breathing.).

GLOSSARY
SEVEN SUNS : There is a belief that the Eldest Sun God manifests in SEVEN SUNS, and the seven rays. Their father was the sage Kasyapa. Their mother was Aditi. Kasyapa and Aditi were parens of the God Vishn`u and the Chief of the demy Gods in Heaven "Indra". Hence all of them have alternate names "Aadityas". The Chief Sun God lives in Maha Meru Mountains (Great 'Meru' Mountains, presumably peaks in Himalayas). With the grace of Sun God, Indians believe, we can cure all our ailments. There is a temple of Surya Narayana (Sun - Vishnu) at Arasavilli in Andhra Pradesh, near Srikakulam, a border District Headquarters Town of Andhra Pradesh.

Gods:
There seems to be a separate God for gambling with "Dice". Here he is called BABHRU.

Procedure :
There are seven verses from 109 A to 109 G. This is FIRST verse. All the verses are to be used in this procedure.

The dice are to be first soaked in curd and honey for three nights.
Then they are to be sanctified by recitiing the seven verses three times.
After chanting the first verse, the dice are to be sanctified with clarified butter and given to the Athvaru (priest who is heading this prayer).

KAAND`A 7, ANUVAAKAM 10, SUUKTAM 109 A

Idam ugraaya Babhravee namoo
yoo aksheesu tamaa avas`i
Ghriteena kali#m Sikshaami
sa noo# mrid`aa tiidri#s`ee.

GIST
I salute the God, who is fierce, very dark brown colored (Babhru), and who controls the movements of dice. By applying the sanctified clarified butter to the dice and throwing them, I am punishing KALI (Pl. see glossary below). I am not a loser. I am going to make my rivals to lose.
Let the God of Dice (Babhru) make us comfortable! (by making us to win).

GLOSSARY
The word "Kali ('A' is short. 'L' is light in pronunciation)" has several meanings. The most appropriate meaning in this context: "The side of the die which is makred with one point". (Kali represents the metal "iron" which in those days seems to be symbol of misfortune and loss). By throwing the "iron" and dice, the performer of this sacrificial prayer feels that he is punishing "kali" i.e. misfortune.

Other meanings of the word "Kali" : 1. Kali age of 432,000 years (called Kali Yuga which started on Feb. 8, 3102 BC as per Indian almanocs. It is also called the iron age representing fall of ethical values. (Other previous ages are golden, silver and copper). 2. quarrel, battle, strife, war. 3. Personification of the Kali Age, called Kali Purusha (equal to Satan). 4. The worest of any class. 5. Bibhiitika tree. 6. A hero. 7. A bud. 8. An arrow.

The gambler, or the Priest conducting the sacrifice on behalf of the gambler is praying: "I am praying you with these dice so as to conquer my rival gamblers. Pl. allow us to get united with clarified butter (the sacrificial oblation). Reject the rival gamblers like a thunder-bolt rejects a withered dry tree.

NOTE
Atharvan`a Veda verses are to be sung using raised (udaatta) and lowered (unudaatta) tones, for which guidance of a teacher is necessary. The Mantras have rhythm as well.

We also relish the oblations along with the Gandharvas and become inebriated.

Gods: : There seems to be a separate God for gambling with "Dice".

Procedure : There are seven verses from 109 A to 109 G. This is the sixthh verse. All the verses are to be used in this procedure.

The dice are to be first soaked in curd and honey for three nights.
Then they are to be sanctified by recitiing the seven verses three times.

Samvasava iti# noo naamadheeya#hm
Ugram pasya, raasht`ra bhritoo hya# kshaaha

#mark points: These are "stress" points. Vedic chants are sung using musical notes. The points where the tone reaches the zenith are "udaatta svaras" and the low tones are "unudaatta svaras". There is also rhythm to follow. These are to be learnt from competent teachers.

Oh Gandharvas! (a class of demy-Gods)- Because you are accomplished persons of wealth, you are called "Samvasus". (Vasu = rich; Sam = Prefix to indicate "very").
We are searching for you and the heavenly nymphs (apsaras) named "Ugram pasya, Raasht`ra bhrita". We are carrying for you and the Moon God, sacrificial oblations. After seeing you and the Moon, we shall become Lords of wealth.

Anxious of victory, I am inviting Gods for gaining wealth. I am adhering to celibasy. I am touching the deep tawn colored dice to serve them (Dice are also Gods). Let the Gods fetch us the fruits of victory in dice and make us comfortable.

Babhru : The word "Babhru" has several dictionary meanings. 1. Deep tawny brown color. 2. Bald headed through disease. 3. Man with tawny hair. 4. A person of Yadava clan (ref: S`isupaala Vatha). 5. God S`iva. 6. God Vishn`u.

#020 FASTEN THE BONE JOINTS WITH GRASS

BOOK 7, CHAPTER 10, VERSE 112 A AND B

SAGE : Brahma.
God : Apas (God of water, "Varuna")
Uses : 1. Treatment of all diseases. 2. Blessing bride and groom in weddings.
Procedure : 1. Water in a pot is to be sanctified by chanting the two verses.

2. The bone joints of the patients are to be fastened with strips of "Munja-darbha" grass. (For Munja-Darbha details, pl. see glosary below).

3. The joints are to be washed with the sacred water, using "Darbha" grass bunches as brushes, while chanting the mantras.

BRIDES AND BRIDE GROOMS
Clarified butter is to be dropped into the sacrificial fire chanting the verses. Spilling ghee and remants are to be sprinkled on the bride and bride groom.

The water in the pots is to be filled into the joined palms of the bride and groom.

GIST
The Heaven and Earth are bearing the ignorant humans, moving and static creatures and are performing sacred vows. The water by forming seven oceans (another form for the Mother Goddess) is flowing. Let the Earth and the Water relieve us from our sins.

VERSE 112 B

Muncant#u maa s`apathyaati
dat#hoo varun`yaa aduta
Ath#oo Yamasya shad`
v#is`aad vis`vasmaad deeva kilbishaat.

GIST
1. Let the herbs relieve me from the wrath a Priest's curse.
2. Let me be relieved from the sins of repeated lying.
3. Let me be relieved from the nooses and lassos fastened at my feet by the God of the Death. (The God of Death uses a noose to carry away the lives of the dying persons).
4. Let me be relieved from all the sins committed by demy-Gods (deeva kilbishaat).

INTERPRETATION/COMMENT
We can see the simulated environment: Yama's noose and the darbha-grass strips tied to the patient's feet.

PURPOSE: Creating dissenssions between lovers.

PROCEDUREA herb called "Trisht`ika (also called Baan`aparn`i)" is powdered. The powder is mixed with red colored milk of goats. The mixture is sprinkled on the bed of the lovers who are to be separated, while chanting the verses.

GIST
"Oh Trisht`ikaa! Your nature itself is 'generation of thirst and burning sensations'. You are poisonous. You are condemned and untouchable. Like a sterile cow(barren cow) you are avoidable".

Vas`aa : Has several meanings. 1. woman 2. wife 3. daughter 4. husband's siter 5. barren woman 6. cow 7. barren cow 8. female elephant.

NOTE
The mantras have to be pronounced using special musical notes, some at a high pitch called "udaatta" and some at a low pitch called "unudaatta". These are to be learnt from a competent Guru.

REMARKS
Some anxious husband/wife having a libertine/adultrous might have approached Priests for help.

#022 OH GHOST TAKE AWAY ALL YOUR LUSTROUS GLOW

BOOK 7, CHAPTER 10, VERSES 114 A, 114 B.

Sage : Bhargava (A sage of Bhrigu clan, presumably the sage Paras`urama.
Gods : Fire God (Agni), Moon (Sooma).

PURPOSE :
1. To wean away or destroy female ghosts and evil forces with the help of the Fire God.
2. To caste off anxieties and depressions teasing human minds.
3. To remove false accusations from others.
4. To cause torture of the torturers of the worshipper.

Procedure
1. The organs which are affected by the evil forces are to be touched and enchanted while reciting the mantra (holy verse).

2. If the aim is to overcome enemies, the verse is to be chanted while looking at the enemies who are intended targets.

3. If the object is to dispel depressions and anxieties, schizoid frights caused by evil forces, then -- clarified butter, dried herbs, and ground rice balls etc. are to be offered as oblations in the sacrificial fire.

VERSE 7-10-114 A

Aa tee dadee vakshn`abhya
Aa tee aham hridayaad dadee
Aa tee mukhasya sankaas`aat
Sarvam tee varca aa dadee.

GIST
"Oh woman! (addressed to the ghost or the evil force) I am taking away all your lustrous glow --
from your face,
from your chest,
and from all your organs.

Prastoo ya#ntee vyaa adhyaha
Praanudhaayaha Proo as`astayaha
Agnii ra#kshasvinii#rhantu
Somoo hantu durasyati.

Gist
Let all the depressions leave this person.
Let all the protective forces become favourable.
Let the Fire God destroy the evil forces (like Rakshasvini)
Let the Moon God destroy the doers of evils.

NOTEIt is a custom to chant these verses in a special singing style learnt from a competent teacher. I have marked some of the points with the sign '#'. There are special tone levels called "Udaatta" and "Anudaatta" (high and low pitches).

#023 OH MISFORTUNE I AM BINDING YOU WITH IRON THORNS SO THAT YOU CAN OUR ENEMIES

BOOK 7, CHAPTER 10, VERSES 115 : A TO D

The purpose of this verse set is to drive away misfortunes and attract auspicious Goddesses of Fortune.

In Hinduism, the Goddess of Fortune is Lakshmi. (In Latvia, North East Europe, the equivalent Goddess is "Lakme maate").

According to this Atharva Veda verse set, there are 101 Lakshmis. Of these some are auspicious and some others are baleful and baneful. These chants pray the Gods Savita (Sun God) and Jaata Veeda (Fire God) to drive away "evil Lakshmis" and send the "auspicious Lakshmi's". The presiding sages are Atharva and Angirasa..

KAAND`A 7, ANUVAKAM 10, SUUKTAM 115 VERSE 7-10-115 A
Pra prateetaha p"aapi Lakshmi nasyeetaha praamutaha
patayan mayeenaankeena d"visht`atee tva sajaamasi.

GIST
Oh misfortune! Go away from here. Do not show yourselves here. Get away even from far off countries. Oh Ill-luck! We are binding you with this iron thorn though you are at a far off place, for catching our enemies.

(Saying this chant, a crow's legs are to be tied with an iron thorn and a purood`aas`m (ground rice offered as oblation, often in a skull or a vessel).

VERSE 7-10-115 B

Yaa maa" Lakshmi patayaaluurnajusht`aa
abhicaskanda vandanee iva vrikshaa
anyatra asmat savitastaam itoo dhaaha
Hir"anyahastoo vasu noo raraan`aha.

GIST
The misfortune of collapsing is all pervading. The Goddess of misfortune dehydrated me like a Badanika creeper (a parasite creeper, may be like water lily) which spreads its tentacles all over the host tree. Oh all inspiring God! Take us away from that bedevilled place to elsewhere. Let the God holding gold in his hands (Hiranyahasta) give us riches.

VERSE 7-10-115 C

Eekaa s`atam Lakshmyoohi maryasya saakam
tanvaa jaanushoodhi jaataaha
taasam paapisht`haa niriitaha pra hi"inmaha
S`ivaaha asmaabhyaam Jaataveedoo niyachcha.

GIST
101 riches are born out of human body at the time of birth. Among them, we are hereby removing the baleful, baneful, sinful Goddesses. Oh Jaata Veeda (Fire God)! Gift us only the auspicious Goddesses.

VERSE 7-10-115 D
Eetaa eena vyaakaran`am khilee gaa nisht`hitaa iva
ramantaam pun`yaa Lakshmiiryaaha paapiist`haa a"niinas`am.

GIST
We are dividing these specific 101 riches into two classes.

Auspicious Goddesses. Just as cows stand all at one place, let all the auspicious Goddesses of luck live in me comfortably.

Let all the baleful, baneful, sinful Goddesses perish.

#024 TRANSFER FEVERS TO FROGS

BOOK 7, CHAPTER 16

The following two chants aim at treating fever using frogs (mand`uuka). The frogs are kept under the cot on which the patient lies down. Water enriched by chanting the two verses is sprinkled on the patient, so as to fall on the frogs beneath.

The idea is the fevers both "hot and cold" should get transferred from the patients to the frogs through the enchanted water.

VERSE 116 ( 7-10-116 )
GIST
I salute the hot fever which produces sweats and shivers. I salute the cold fever which breaks the past longings for desires.

VERSE 117 ( 7-10-117 )
GIST
Let all the fevers which (1) recur everyday (2) every two days (3) without any definite schedule, catch and pervade on the FROG.

KAAND`A 7, ANUVAAKAM 10, VERSE 116

INTRODUCTION

Atharvana Veda (Ve is long in pronunciation) is the fourth of the Indian Sacred Books - The Vedas. Though the Vedas are four in number, initially there seemed to be only three: Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, and Sama Veda. Atharvana Veda was apparently added later.

SUBJECT MATTER: Mostly prayers for well being, some spells for destruction of enemy, some spells to cure sick persons.
